Drunken bus ride cost man $100

A man thrown off a bus for being drunk found it to be an expensive trip he was fined $100 for his behaviour.

Richard Smith, 49, of Kilderry Lane, Smith's, pleaded guilty at Magistrates' Court to being drunk and incapable on Monday.

Prosecutor Paula Tyndale said Smith was on a PTB bus around 9.50 a.m. when his behaviour caused the driver to stop in Middle Road, Devonshire, and call the Police.

The driver told the Police Smith was misbehaving, and asked them to move him off the vehicle.

Officers found Smith sitting in a seat with red eyes and slurring speech, refusing to get off the bus. He was eventually taken away to Hamilton Police station.

Ms Tyndale said Smith is known to the courts.

"You couldn't make it home?" inquired Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner of Smith.

He replied: "It was one of those days sir."

"You've got to pay for the bus ride," chided the Magistrate, meting out the fine and ordering him to pay it by April 10 or spend ten days in jail.
