A recent planning notice stated that the Ministry of Works and Engineering planned to install a playing field and widen Pembroke Canal on Glebe Road.

The proposed work -- the first phase of the future Pembroke Park -- will take place on the Glebe Field, just north of another yet-to-be completed play area, the Parsons Road Playground in Pembroke.

Plans call for the Pembroke Canal to be dredged and widened. Some of the materials from the canal will be used to fill in the proposed field.

A Parks official said a bridge will eventually be built to connect the Parsons Road Playground with the first phase of the Pembroke Park.

The Government plans to turn the former dump into Bermuda's central park.

But it will take years for the 23-acre refuse dump to be transformed into a park.

In 1994, the first of a planned 4,000-plus trees were planted on the dump's garbage strewn southern slope.
