Gilbert Institute marks 75 years

Gilbert Institute is to start celebrating its 75th Anniversary today with a series of events planned.

The events will kick off with a special assembly honouring former principals of Gilbert Institute and the son of founder C.G.G. Gilbert, John Gilbert.

There will also be a Bermuda Day running race and parade, ending with games on the playing field.

On June 13, the school will allow past students to visit former classrooms and meet the staff and students as the school hosts a 75th Anniversary Reunion Party, scheduled from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. with refreshments being served by current students.

This will allow acquaintances to mingle and enjoy old photos of Gilbert Institute, listen to its choir, buy raffle tickets for prizes and get a T-shirt commemorating the event. A 75th Anniversary Fair will also be held on October 18.

Gilbert Institute's fundraising project during the anniversary year is to improve the lunch garden, including a user-friendly area for the children to eat their lunch, with the comfort of an awning to protect the students from the noonday sunrays.

To fund this project, a donation of $75 is requested, however, any amount would be appreciated.

Former students, parents and supporters are asked to send in old photos of Gilbert, memorabilia, old uniforms and such like items. They are asked to label all photos clearly on the back so they can be returned.

Parking will be nearby at the Bermuda College or on the big field turn right at Cardoza's Garage.
