The Motor Car Amendment Bill 1997 proposes to change the registration procedures for owners of new cars.

The bill states that new cars, that were first registered on or after January 1, 1993, only have to be examined for licensing purposes on the third and fifth years and every year thereafter.

The Transport Control director Donald Dane said the current law states that new cars need to be examined by TCD in the third year and every year thereafter.

"The only change is the fourth year,'' Mr. Dane explained. "If it's good enough to be passed in the third year, it's good enough for the fourth year.'' He said TCD records showed that very few new cars, which were checked in the third year, had any problems in the fourth one.

"It will cut down on the red tape,'' Mr. Dane added.

But drivers will still have to pay to have their cars relicensed each year since the condition requiring consecutive licensing will remain.
