Despite rising crime, the Island remains a safe bet for holidaymakers seeking peace of mind.

That's according to the British newspaper The Mail On Sunday in an article headed "The last safe places left to go on holiday''.

Compared to the traditional baddies of Africa and the United States, Bermuda is a saint, the article suggests.

But up against Sweden, the Island's imperfections can just about be spotted.

"In the British colony of Bermuda crime is not entirely unknown, but having more than your camcorder snatched is unlikely''.

The article comes amid mounting concern for the safety of holidaymakers abroad.

A league of hazardous vacation spots was drawn up in the publication Holiday Which?.

Citing the magazine, The Mail On Sunday claims Sweden emerged victorious as the worldwide winner for safety.

It came bottom in the tables for violence, theft, accident and illness.

Other Scandinavian countries -- Norway, Finland and Denmark -- also fared well.

Austria, Switzerland, Mauritius, Japan, Antartica, Montserrat, Anguilla, and, yes, Bermuda, also receive good ratings.

At the other end of the league, Australia, New Zealand, and much of South America, can be added to the United States and Africa as places best avoided by those prone to worry.
