The phone at his former law office is disconnected and Madeiros cannot be easily contacted in prison.

Madeiros, 64, is serving a three-year prison sentence after he was convicted last month of cheating landowner Boyd Davis of $506,000 while managing his finances.

Mr. John Cooper, vice-president of the Bermuda Bar Council, said a couple of letters were received from clients of Madeiros who want to retrieve deeds or documents he held for them. He would not comment on who wrote the letters or whether there had been queries about any funds Madeiros held in trust.

"At the moment, I understand they're secure,'' Mr. Cooper said of documents Madeiros held for clients. "People can't just wander into his office on Reid Street and help themselves. This is a matter that may or may not be discussed at our next Bar Council meeting.'' Mr. Richard Hector QC, who defended Madeiros at trial, said it was partly to avoid a problem like this one that he sought bail for Madeiros between the time he was convicted and sentenced. The request was denied.

"I recognised that as an attorney, he would have a lot of loose ends to tie up,'' he said. As far as documents held by Madeiros, "I don't think anyone suspects anything untoward is happening''.

The Bar Council may have to take responsibility for addressing any concerns of former clients, Mr. Hector said.

It is understood Madeiros has not been disbarred. A spokesman for the Supreme Court said last week no application had been received to remove his name from the Bermuda bar roll kept by the Registrar.
