L.F. Wade assisting Haiti relief flights

Flights on their way to assist in earthquake-ravaged Haiti have had airport landing, terminal fees and handling charges waived at L.F. Wade International Airport.

A spokesperson said 15 aircraft have stopped to refuel here on their way to the Caribbean nation after it was devastated by 7.0 strength shocks last Tuesday. Government and Bermuda Aviation Services (BAS) agreed to lift the fees as part of the global humanitarian effort hoping to rebuild the impoverished nation.

"Given our unique geographic location, L.F. Wade International Airport is serving as a minor staging facility for relief missions from around the world making their way to Haiti to provide aid supplies and resources," said airport general manager Aaron Adderley.

"Most have stopped in Bermuda for refuelling and rest during their journey. As these flight missions are providing much needed assistance to those persons affected by the devastating earthquake, the Government has waived all airport landing and terminal fees while Bermuda Aviation Services (BAS), the company providing ground services at the airport for each of the flights, has also kindly waived all of its handling charges."

The spokesperson added it is expected many more planes will pass through the Island while relief efforts in Haiti continue.
