A "major backlog" of mail to Bermuda from the United States is causing delayed delivery to the Island.

The cause of the problem or how long it might last, was yesterday unknown, however a Government spokesperson said only United States Postal Service (USPS) mail is affected.

"The Bermuda Post Office would like to inform the public that the USPS has advised that there is a major backlog of mail destined for Bermuda at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

"The USPS is trying to move the mail as quickly as possible but cannot confirm a date when mail will leave JFK and arrive in Bermuda. Further updates will be issued as we receive them."
