Man fined for role in currency fraud

George H. Mouchette, 35, of Broome Street, admitted forging monetary forms, uttering them at the Bank of Butterfield, and making false statements on three occasions in April 1990.

Magistrates' Court heard yesterday.

He asked for six other offences to be considered.

Sgt. Earl Kirby, prosecuting, said Mouchette was part of a network of fraudsters, some of whom had already been fined. The total involved in this case was $17,742.

Mouchette, who used false names on the forms, was fined $540.

His lawyer, Mr. Ed Bailey, said Mouchette had been a small part of the network.

Hotel Occupancy Tax for September must also be paid by that date. There is a penalty for late payment.

Mr. John Osborne, who ruled the East Caribbean country for 13 years, yesterday began a court hearing along with his former agriculture minister, Nowell Tuitt.

Osborne is a distant cousin of the Hon. Sir John Swan.

The closed-door hearing is a preliminary inquiry into a charge they conspired to solicit $10,000 from an American, Owen Rooney, for securing almost 10 acres of prime development land without getting a foreign landholding licence.

Both men have denied the charge since their arrest by detectives from Britain's New Scotland Yard on July 27.

They were granted bail by a magistrate on August 12 for 70,000 East Caribbean dollars and had their passports seized.

Osborne's party was swept out of office a year ago when a new opposition party won a general elections.
