Mobil Oil's former Bermuda boss John Newton dies at 95

Former long-time Bermuda resident and boss at Mobil Oil's Marine and Trading Company on the Island, John Newton, has died aged 95.

Mr. Newton died in Redding, Connecticut on February 21. He lived in Bermuda for 36 years and retired from running the Mobil Oil operation in 1978, but continued working for several Bermuda companies until he was 92 when he and his wife moved to Redding. At the age of 93 he wrote the "Story of the Iraq Petroleum Company".

Mr. Newton was born in Philadelphia in 1914. He was predeceased by his brother Howard, sister Dorothy Stephens and eldest daughter Jo-Ann Vercoe (Will) Moody (Stan). He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Angelita (Alonso), daughters Nancy duBusc (Richard), Pamela Newkirk (Ben), eight grand and eight great-grandchildren who span the globe.

Starting in the mailroom in 1933, Mr. Newton worked his way up to president and director of the Near East Development Corp. at Mobil in its New York and London offices.

He was a member of the Royal Bermuda Yacht and Mid-Ocean Clubs. He loved his piano, his banjo, golf and swimming. He was a clear thinker and a great adviser with a keen sense of humour.
