Queen of Hip Hop Soul, to perform this summer
R&B superstar Mary J. Blige is set to give a live performance in Bermuda on August 14.
Tickets go on sale a week from Saturday cost and venue details have yet to be announced. Local production company T.O.C. Entertainment and its Atlanta-based partner SLaP, announced the concert at a press conference held at the BIU building yesterday.
Grammy Award-winning artist Robin Thicke is also on the bill, as are a number of local performers.
Tickets will go on sale locally on May 23. A limited number of tickets will be available online.
"We want to make sure that everyone on the Island has an opportunity to purchase the tickets," said Sheldon Posey of SLaP Entertainment.
Both Ms Blige and Mr. Thicke will travel to Bermuda with their own bands. The show is part of a series of "four or five shows" planned for Bermuda this summer, Mr. Posey said. An announcement on further concerts will be made at the end of this month.
"Other acts that we will be bringing to Bermuda will be just as big, and just as hot," Mr. Posey added.
"We're bringing the best," he said, "and one of the main reasons that we're doing these shows is to provide a platform for local talent. We'll be using all the local contractors we can. This is by Bermuda and for Bermuda."
T.O.C. Entertainment mounted a large number of well-received live music shows between 1993 and 2002.
Last weekend it put on a concert at the Fairmont Southampton Princess featuring singer Jazmine Sullivan. Comedian Rickey Smiley was also billed to appear, but had problems with his airline ticket and was unable to reach Bermuda.
Ticketholders have been asked to hold on to their ticket stubs, which will be valid for admittance to a rescheduled show on July 10.
Seven of Mary J. Blige's albums have been certified multi-platinum.
Her songs have consistently reached number one on music charts around the world for the past 15 years.
She has sold more than 48 million albums worldwide and received more than two dozen Grammy Award nominations for her work.
She also won the World Music Legends Award for combining hip hop and soul.
From her 1992 debut, 'What's the 411?' through to her latest album, 'Growing Pains', Ms Blige has remained in the public eye.
Her latest single, 'Just Fine', became her 18th top 10 single on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart, tying her with Mariah Carey for the most Top 10 songs on the chart since 1993.
Robin Thicke is a singer, songwriter, musician, composer and occasional actor.
His music features a predominately contemporary R&B sound. His albums have sold more than two million copies in the US alone. Mr. Thicke is the son of actor Alan Thicke and his first wife, 'Days of Our Lives' actress and singer Gloria Loring.
