Second term for DPP's Field

British Prosecutor Rory Field has been reappointed to serve as Bermuda's Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for three years.

Mr. Field joined the DPP in July 2007 after fighting off more than 50 applications for the position previously held by Vinette Graham-Allen.

Yesterday Government House released a statement yesterday saying Mr. Field would begin his second term this September.

A spokesperson said: "Part of the role of an expatriate officer in a senior position such as [DPP] is to plan for his or her own succession.

"In his second period Mr. Field will apply special emphasis to encouraging and mentoring Bermudians who are potential successors, and will brief the Governor regularly on progress.

"There is every intention to appoint a Bermudian as [DPP] in 2013."

Mr. Field acquired his position after a three-year period of unrest under the guidance of Mrs. Graham-Allen, a Jamaican national who was tasked with training a Bermudian replacement.

A 2005 report by Government's Department of Management Services indicated she should be bought out of her contract and a Bermudian put in her place.

However, in 2007 Mr. Field was chosen over a field of 50 applicants by a panel chaired by Deputy Governor Mark Capes.

Yesterday defence lawyer Larry Scott, who initially said he was concerned about Mr. Field's appointment, said he admired his work.

"During his administration of the post it's certainly become more efficient. He has done a fair job; he's got the department going.

"I am also hopeful for those they are working through the ranks. He ought to be able to find capable attorneys to fill that role.

"Over the years we should have been able to try our own. I think Rory has done a fine job and I think he's a fine gentleman.

"His integrity we can rely on and if he passes on his experience that's a good thing."
