Speeding rider had been drinking

A man was arrested for impaired driving after being caught speeding on the outskirts of Hamilton.

Owen Place, 34, was sentenced in Magistrates' Court yesterday after being clocked riding his motorcycle at 55 kilometres along Crow Lane on January 3.

Crown Counsel Larissa Burgess said: "While officers were writing a speeding ticket they noticed he was unsteady and smelt of intoxicants.

"His speech was slurred, his eyes were glazed and he was unsteady on his feet."

Place admitted to officers he had been drinking.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,000, banned him from driving vehicles for a year and imposed ten demerit points.
