Teen eschews Xmas gifts for Sunshine League donations

Jessica Mihelcic presents a cheque of $210 to Denise Carey, Executive director of Sunshine League.

One young Bermudian has forfeited her birthday money in order to give others less fortunate a chance at a merry Christmas.

Jessica Mihelcic, who celebrated her 12th birthday on December 14, decided she didn't want gifts and instead asked family and friends to donate to her favourite charity, Sunshine League.

"I looked at all the stuff I had and I realised a lot of other people don't have as much as I do.

"I told people that I am donating to the Sunshine League and they came up with $210," Miss Mihelcic told The Royal Gazette.

The money the preteen helped to raise will be going to help needy children on the Island get their hair done; it is a rare occasion for them to take pride in their appearance and feel beautiful and special.

"Physical appearance is important to them," explained Sunshine League executive director Denise Carey, "and it's not something we can do often."

"It will be wonderful when they are getting their hair done to share with them Jessica's story and her well wishes for them," she continued.

Christmas is one of the few times staff at Sunshine League get to deliver good news to the 13 children in residence.

"Staff are here at the most difficult times of the year. This is the time that the staff get to share the good tidings. It's usually not good news, it's regarding behaviour or being removed from their homes," said Ms Carey.

This year Sunshine League brought the Kwanza celebration to the children, who were educated about the African American holiday and took part in a family dinner.

"The charity will also be able to give each child a satchel full of presents to take home to their parents, grandparents and foster homes for the holiday.

"(But) it's not just about what we are giving to the children, we also encourage them to give to others," said Ms Carey, who helps the children feed the homeless and give away comforters throughout the holiday.

"(Donations are) huge not only for the children but for the parents to feel that they are able to share this special occasion with the children as well," the charity worker added.

And Miss Mihelcic's donation was particularly special considering she is helping children close to her own age. Anyone who wishes to help the Sunshine League is encouraged to call 292-4360.
