Two-year ban for impaired driver

An 'imperfect' Sandys man was caught drinking and driving for the second time in the past five years.

Robert Wilkinson, 41, of Rockywold Road, admitted to driving while under the influence and perverting the course of justice on Saturday at 3.30 a.m., after he was caught driving east along Front Street with his head lights off.

Wilkinson told Police he didn't have a driver's license on him and said his name was Robert Johnstone, but no name matching that date of birth was on Police files, so he was taken to the station. While there officers noticed he was unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glazed and he smelt of intoxicating liquor.

Wilkinson admitted to drinking and told Police: "I've only had a few beers." They gave him a breathalyser test, the lower reading of which showed he had 100 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

He told Plea Court: "I'm an imperfect man. I apologise profusely to the Sergeant. The fact of the matter is I also go by the name of Robert Bernard Johnstone, but in the eyes of the law what I did was inappropriate.

"I'm ashamed that I was driving drunk yet again. I recognise now that I have a problem I need to address," he added.

Another drinking and driving matter for Wilkinson was addressed in Monday's session of Plea Court. The court heard that on September 4, 2004, he was caught swerving the centre line on Front Street.

Police saw that he displayed the traits of intoxication and took him to Hamilton Police Station where a breathalyser proved he had 197 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in his system. Wilkinson told Police his name was Robert Mallory (his mother's maiden name).

"I have no recollection of that, I was quite inebriated," he said Monday.

He was given a $1,000 fine for each offence, ten demerit points for the latest offence, and was disqualified from all vehicles for 24 months.
