'What kind of security wouldn't notify Police?'
A teenager has claimed he was punched and robbed on the MV Longtail early Saturday morning and then watched as security guards allowed his attackers to walk away.
The boy, who gave his age as 16, said the boat's security team ended the struggle but did nothing to contain the robbers after, and didn't report the incident to the Police.
Contacted yesterday, boat owner Gavaska Lodge acknowledged there was a fight on-board but refused to comment further.
The teenager, who does not want to be named, said he was attacked as the vessel was returning to Hamilton after a booze cruise.
He said he was walking down the stairs to the lower level of the boat. when he said he was grabbed by two men.
"These two guys reached into my pockets and grabbed my phone and my money," he said. "We started to struggle and we went down the stairs. I got hit a couple times in my head."
While there were almost 200 people on the sold-out cruise, the teenager estimated that only a handful of people saw the fight.
He said it was ended by the boat's security team, which dragged the victim away and let his attackers go free.
"Three security guys pulled me away, but they just let them go," he said.
When the ship arrived at the dock, Police officers were already at the scene. To the victim's surprise, the attackers walked right past them without being stopped.
"They were walking pretty quickly, but they just walked off," he said. "The security should have called the Police, but there was no communication."
"The Police are handling it now," said the victim
The victim's father told The Royal Gazette he believed the Police hadn't been notified by the security after the incident.
"The Police were on the dock, but they were completely unaware," he stated. "What kind of security wouldn't notify Police? Nobody should have been let off that boat until those people had been arrested."
A Police spokesperson said yesterday: "During the early morning hours of Saturday, August 29, Police received a report of a robbery onboard the MV Longtail when the victim, a 14-year-old young man from Devonshire and his parents, attended the Hamilton Police Station after the cruise had concluded.
"It appears that the Devonshire teenager was assaulted and robbed of a quantity of cash and a BlackBerry cellular phone by three unknown young men who were also onboard the vessel."
The spokesperson continued: "There were no apparent injuries to the victim; however he was advised to attend King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for medical assessment."
Inquiries into the incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.
