Beach Hotel, the Acting Premier said yesterday.

"Threats hanging over our premier industry like thunderclouds are not going to improve the situation,'' the Hon. Ann Cartwright DeCouto told The Royal Gazette . "There is a long-held belief that you do not muddy your own doorstep.'' Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto said she was not taking sides in the dispute between the BIU and the Paget hotel. But Home Affairs Minister the Hon. Irving Pearman has referred the fight to the Essential Industries Disputes Settlement Board on June 28, and behind-the-scenes efforts by the Labour Relations Officer to find a settlement continue, she said.

"We should allow due process to occur.'' Mrs. Cartwright DeCouto's comments came as workers at other hotels pledged "moral support'' for the threatened strike at Elbow Beach, BIU president Mr.

Ottiwell Simmons MP said.

No date for the strike was set, but Mr. Simmons said it will happen. "We'll set a date whenever we decide to set a date,'' he told reporters after meeting with about 100 hotel workers for more than an hour.

All BIU hotel employees were called to the meeting, and Mr. Sim mons described the turnout as "modest at best.'' Workers at other hotels may help on the picket line at Elbow Beach in the event of a strike, but no job action at other hotels is called for, Mr.

Simmons said.

The dispute arose when Elbow Beach management sought to terminate its contract with the BIU and give workers a new deal that included wage increases, improved benefits, profit sharing, and a management-worker committee to settle grievances.

Last month, the union threatened a token three-day strike once the hotel's occupancy reached 70 percent. But it has been above that figure for some time.

BIU workers in all industries have been called to a meeting at 5.15 p.m.

tomorrow, again to discuss the Elbow Beach situation.

Mr. Simmons attacked both the Government and the American owners of the Paget hotel.

"The Bermuda Government is under the control of the foreign monied people,'' he said.

He denied the prolonged strike threat was disrupting tourism, or even the hotel itself. "I haven't got any report that it's being disrupted,'' he said.

"They've got plenty of people there.'' Elbow Beach managing director Mr. John Jefferis also called on the BIU to await the June 28 hearing.
