Woman fined for driving while disqualified

A St. George's woman caught driving while disqualified told Magistrates' Court her supervisor made her do it.

Brionna Harvey, 21, of Vallis Point Road, said her boss knew she had been banned from the Island's roads until October 2011, but still asked her to drive and get lunch on September 8.

Harvey said: "My supervisor asked me to pick up lunch for the staff. I didn't want to but I went. I was the only one that could go because it was just me and (the supervisor). The other ones went down the road and (the supervisor) had to go to her son."

Acting Magistrate Juan Wolffe said the excuse was "ridiculous" and could have had grave consequences.

"Let me tell you why it is serious. If you got into an accident and injured someone's child, maybe mine, you would be uninsured because you are not supposed to be on the road and they would not have any compensation from you."

This was Harvey's second driving while disqualified offence and she was fined $1,000 and given seven demerit points. "Are your supervisor or your staff going to pay for that $1,000?," Mr. Wolffe asked.
