The mongrel was taken from its owner, Ronald Paynter, who was accused of cruelty early last year, and kept in SPCA kennels until after his trial.

Paynter was finally convicted of cruelty earlier this month, allowing SPCA officials to find Zebra a permanent home.

Paynter, 29, of Parsons Road, Pembroke, was in prison for 10 days while the dog was finally released to new owners.

He had been fined $100 for picking up his dog and dropping it from waist-height on Front Street in February, last year.

A spokesperson at the kennels in Paget said that the dog has gone to a good home and is doing very well.

Zebra is only 18 months old, and will now need a lot of care after spending most of his life in kennels.
