Breaking News: 47-year-old man shot dead

A 47-year-old man was fatally shot in the Spinning Wheel nightclub earlier this morning — shortly after another shooting at the Mid Atlantic Boat Club in Devonshire.

Assistant Police Commissioner David Mirfield told The Royal Gazette at the murder scene in Court Street, Hamilton: “We are not directly linking the two incidents at the moment but we have got to keep an open mind that they could be linked.”

He confirmed that the two shootings appeared to be gang-related and said forensics officers were scouring both scenes for evidence.

Police got a 911 call about the Spinning Wheel incident at about 12.30 a.m. The victim was pronounced dead at 1.08 a.m. at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. It is the seventh fatal shooting this year.

A man was injured in the earlier shooting — just after midnight — at the Mid Atlantic Boat Club on North Shore Road. He is being treated at KEMH.

Mr. Mirfield said the 47-year-old — whose name has not been released — died as a result of gunshot wounds received at the Spinning Wheel.

“His relatives are at the hospital and will be allocated a family liaison officer to ensure that they are supported,” he said.

“Forensic officers are examining the scene. The scene will remain cordoned off for the remainder of this morning until we are satisfied that no further evidence can be obtained.”

He said the club owners and witnesses were being questioned. “A number of officers have been recalled to duty. There will be a significant Police presence in and around this area for the foreseeable future.”

Mr. Mirfield, speaking at 2.40 a.m. today, said the Mid Atlantic Boat Club had also been cordoned off by Police. He was not aware of any weapons being recovered at either scene.
