Breaking News: Pregnant schoolgirl stabbed 18 times, court hears

Murdered schoolgirl Rhiana Moore was pregnant when she was stabbed to death, and was in a secret relationship with the man accused of the crime, a jury heard today.Opening the case against 33-year-old Ze Menefeskiduse Selassie at the Supreme Court, prosecutor Michael McColm said the victim was stabbed more than 18 times.“You will hear evidence from which you will conclude that it’s clear that Miss Moore had been subjected to a vicious attack by someone wielding a knife, stabbing her so many times, in such a manner, that the person’s intent could only have been to cause her death,” he told the jury. “The prosecution says that the person who did that act is the defendant who’s now before the court.”

Two Berkeley Institute students have been taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after a stabbing at the school this afternoon.

Police media relations spokesperson Dwayne Caines said both parties involved were teenage boys.

“There was an altercation that took place at Berkeley Institute,” he said. “It appears that this altercation took place between two 16-year-old males.”

He said the boys are now being treated at hospital — one for a puncture wound to his chest, the other for an injury to his hand.

Neither injury is thought to be life threatening.

Details about the incident remain unclear at this time, however the school is reportedly in a state of lockdown, with no one allowed in or out of the premises.

Continued Mr. Caines: “The school is secure. Police are on the scene. Police believe it’s in hand and we do not want parents to panic. The incident is now under control and students are carrying on as usual in their classrooms.”

Mr. Caines said that school will finish at 3.30 p.m. as usual and reassured parents not to come to the school until then as the situation is now under control.
