Christmas drinks lead to one year ban, fine

A St. George's woman crashed her car into an airport fence after a night out socialising with colleagues.

Susan Young of Narrow Lane pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to driving under the influence. The court heard that at 5.15 a.m. on December 6, Young was driving her car east on Kindley Field Road when she swerved over the middle line and into the fence surrounding the L.F. Wade International Airport.

When officers arrived, the 45-year-old said the accident occurred because she fell asleep. However, officers smelled alcohol on her breath and noticed her speech was slurred and her eyes were glazed. Young admitted she had a few drinks that night.

The defendant's lawyer, Shawn Crockwell, told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner his client was "remorseful" for her actions and explained she had been at a Christmas event with colleagues where she had been drinking.

Mr. Warner gave Young a $1,000 fine, a one-year driving ban and ten demerit points.
