Deuss appeal team praised

Government's legal team has come under high praise for its recent victory in an appeal against Bermuda by oil tycoon John Deuss.

Attorney General Kim Wilson and Director of Public Prosecution Rory Field congratulated Bermuda's lawyers on the successful judgement issued by the Privy Council last week.

In particular they highlighted Cindy Clarke from the Department of Public Prosecutions, Solicitor General Barry McKay and Huw Shepheard and Renee Foggo from the Attorney General's Chambers "for their hard work, good humour and their commitment often beyond normal working hours and on weekends".

Said Mr. Field: "I am delighted that a team of lawyers from the Department of Public Prosecutions and from the Attorney General's Chambers were able to achieve this result. Although I had the privilege of leading the team, this was a collaborative effort."

Senator Wilson added: "I concur with Mr. Field and extend my congratulations to the team who have achieved this fine result.

"This has been a lengthy process. The result demonstrates the commitment of the Government legal team which I am pleased to acknowledge included two well respected Bermudian counsel who will no doubt, have gained valuable insight into proceedings of this nature."

Mr. Deuss was arrested to face extradition to the Netherlands in October 2006 after an international warrant was issued.

The Dutch multi-millionaire, who owns property in Bermuda, was seized by detectives here, before being voluntarily extradited to his homeland.

He later launched a civil appeal against his arrest which was rejected by both the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal.
