Friends of Hospice and Belco hope to raise $150,000 for Rubber Duck Derby

Friends of Hospice and BELCO hope to raise $150,000 during the 14th annual Rubber Duck Derby this summer.

The event is Friends of Hospice's major fund-raiser for the year and aids Bermuda's only hospice, Agape House.

This year the popular event will be held on June 6 at Ordnance Island, St. George's. The corporate race, the first race of the day, will begin at 3 p.m. with the Youth, Pamper Me, and Family races to follow.

Live entertainment, food stalls, baked goods, a bouncy castle and other festivities will be available throughout the event.

According to Linda Smith, BELCO Senior Vice President of Corporate Relations, funds raised at past derbies have been used to fund a full-time chef, support bereavement services, purchase medical equipment, medication, and fund ongoing infrastructure improvements to Agape House. BELCO is the main sponsor for the event and has been for the past 13 years.

"Friends of Hospice is the charity supporting Agape House and hospice care in Bermuda," said Friends of Hospice Chairman, Tim Hunter. "Agape House doors are open to anyone who is facing a life limiting disease.

"It offers palliative care to those in need when curative treatment is no longer a viable option."

Rubber Duck Derby tickets are available at Agape House, BELCO, Bermuda Gas and Utility and Collector's Hill service station. Alternatively tickets can be purchased by calling Friends of Hospice at 232-0859.

Tickets will also be sold at grocery stores and other locations throughout Bermuda.
