Girl, 10, on pedestrian crossing is hurt by bike
A motorcyclist hit a ten-year-old girl on a pedestrian crossing while overtaking stalled traffic on Tuesday.
The Southampton resident sustained bruises to her foot and abdomen as a result of the accident, which happened opposite Heron Bay MarketPlace at 4.05 p.m.
The 18-year-old rider of the motorcycle was issued a ticket for riding without due care and attention and is expected to appear in court on charges soon.
According to Police, traffic in both directions had stopped to allow the girl and her brother to cross the road.
"The rider of the motorcycle, an 18-year-old Warwick man, was travelling east on Middle Road, overtook the eastbound line of traffic and collided with the ten-year-old girl," the spokesperson said. "The victim sustained bruising to her right foot and abdomen while her brother was apparently not injured. The motorcyclist was not injured; however his cycle received minor front-end damage."
The incident was one of three traffic accidents reported to Police on Tuesday.
At 9.30 a.m., a fire engine collided with a truck travelling on Pitts Bay Road.
According to officers the driver of the fire engine and the driver of a "heavy truck" were both attempting to negotiate a bend near the junction with Old Slip Lane.
Said a Police spokesperson: "The driver of the fire truck sustained a bruised right hand while the other passengers in the vehicle were not injured. The driver of the heavy truck, a 59-year-old Hamilton Parish man, and his front seat passenger, a 49-year-old Smith's parish man, were not injured. The fire truck received moderate front-end damage while the heavy truck received relatively minor front-end damage."
A third accident occurred at 2.35 p.m., at the junction of Middle Road and Corkscrew Hill in Devonshire.
A motorcycle travelling east on Middle Road collided with a van exiting Tribe Road No. Three.
Said a spokesperson: "The rider of the cycle, a 39-year-old Warwick man, sustained bruising and abrasions to his left forearm and right hand. The driver of the van, a 51-year-old Sandys parish man, was not injured. The cycle received extensive damage to its left side while the van received moderate front end damage."
