Honour student Chelsea recalls her memorable trip to United Nations

Going places: Chelsea Crockwell has just returned from representing Bermuda at a meeting on Bioethics at the United Nations.

Bermuda Institute class of 2010 student Chelsea Crockwell who has recently returned home after attending a United Nations meeting on bioethics, is an honour student, a volunteer, school prefect, has a GPA of 3.64 and just like the title of one of her favourite books – she has “big plans” for her future.

”’Big Plans’ is the story of a little boy who is put into detention, but while he is there he has visions about conquering the world because he has ‘big plans’,” said Chelsea.

”I want that book for one of my graduation presents because I have big plans just like the little boy does. It doesn’t matter what state or situation you are in, if you have goals in your mind you can make it and if you make big plans you can achieve them.”

At the United Nations, Chelsea attended talks about the rabidly changing world of science where they took on questions like ‘is euthanasia ethical?”.

At the UN, I was sitting next to people from Argentina, Zambia, China, Nigeria and I<>just loved being able to interact with people from all around the world who are interested in making a change like I am,” she said.

”I believe in being a world citizen, not just a citizen of my own country. It is important to me to make a difference – especially with the environment. I want to save every organism that I possibly can – everywhere.

”Going to the UN<>provided me with an opportunity to learn. I<>got a chance to hear scientists and doctors present on things like organ transplants, buying embryos and euthanasia. I loved the UN.”

After spending a lot of time volunteering at the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo (BAMZ) Chelsea was given a staff position. Four years at BAMZ has helped her realise her love for the environment and animals.

”I just love animals and I really enjoy the hands on experience that I get at the Aquarium,” she said. “I want to be a veterinarian.”

Chelsea said she plans to attend veterinary school in the UK after completing a foundation year at the University of Bath.

”After a foundation year I plan on taking pre-vet and then attending veterinary school at the University of Bristol. And hopefully in seven years I will be a doctor.”

Writing, said Chelsea, is one of her favourite hobbies. An avid writer of poetry, Chelsea has started compiling a book of her poems in the form of a book titled “Verbal Scrapbook”. The ambitious young lady also plans to combine her passion for animals and the environment with her love for writing to create children’s books by writing about her experiences with them in a way that children would enjoy.

While she understands that everybody is different and not everyone has had the same opportunities as her, Chelsea has some words of wisdom for other young Bermudians.

"Every situation is different. Everybody comes out of a different situation but your life is what you make it, what you determine it to be,’ she pointed out.

”If you decide at a young age that you are not going to try, your life is going to reflect that. Just stop, look at yourself in the mirror and say what do I want to be? Where do I want to go? And make it happen.”
