A man crashed his car on New Year's Day after driving while impaired by alcohol.

William Hatherley, 64, of Dudley Hill, Paget, pleaded guilty to the offence at Magistrates' Court.

Senior Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney explained that the defendant's car came into collision with another car on Middle Road, near Bostock Hill, around 8.30 a.m.

Neither of the drivers was injured, but Police officers who attended the incident noticed Hatherley's breath smelled of alcohol, his speech was slurred and his eyes were glazed.

He denied he had been drinking, but was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and taken to Hamilton Police Station where he was breath tested.

The result of the test was not revealed in court by the prosecutor.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Hatherley, who is self-employed, $800.

He also banned him from the roads for 12 months and meted out ten demerit points.
