Man in court accused of riot involvement
An eighth man has been charged in connection with alleged gang rioting in St. David's on May 3.
Violence is said to have flared in three separate areas near Gombey's Restaurant & Bar at Clearwater Beach, at St. David's Cricket Club and near the entrance to St. David's.
Three men were taken to hospital with stab wounds after the mass brawl which is said to have involved up to 100 men armed with knives, machetes and baseball bats.
Detectives later said the incident was believed to have involved rivals from the 42 Crew from the St. Monica's Road area, and the Parkside gang from the Middletown/Parson's Road area. Reports that a gun was fired could not be confirmed, but Police said they had obtained video footage shot during the incident.
On May 6, seven men were charged with taking part in the alleged riot. They pleaded not guilty to the offence and were bailed with conditions including a curfew and thrice-weekly reporting to a Police station.
The Royal Gazette understands the charge relates to the violence at the cricket club, and the men are due to return to Magistrates' Court tomorrow for a trial date to be fixed.
Yesterday, 25-year-old Justin Denbrook was brought before the court and charged with participating in a riot on the same date. He pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutor Cindy Clarke told the court the charge relates to the same night of violence, but a different incident in a different location in St. David's. She told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that three witnesses are lined up to give evidence for the Crown.
Defence lawyer Llewellyn Peniston stressed his client's case was "unrelated" to that of the seven already charged. The Royal Gazette understands the allegation is that Denbrook was involved in violence at the entrance to St. David's.
Senior Magistrate Archibald ordered the defendant to return to court for a trial on June 29. He set bail at $3,000 and told Denbrook he has to obey a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew and report to Southside Police Station three times per week.
