Man who stole sherry had only 20 cents
A Pembroke man pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to stealing cooking sherry from a grocery store.
The court heard from Crown counsel Maria Sofianos that on August 30, last year, Lionel Outerbridge, 57, of Parson's Road, entered the Shopping Centre, on Victoria Street, with a white plastic bag containing his belongings.
The manager of the store saw Outerbridge take a bottle of Gosling's Sherry Cooking Wine and put it in the plastic bag.
He was then approached by the manager who asked to look in the bag. When the manager looked in bag he found the bottle, to which Outerbridge said: "I bought it from another store and I have the receipt to prove it."
When asked to see the receipt he admitted to stealing the cooking sherry. The manager asked him if he had money to pay for the bottle. Outerbridge, who has previous convictions of a similar nature, said he only had 20 cents, admitted to stealing the bottle and said he was sorry.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $200.
