No clean getaway for body wash thief

A man was sentenced to nine months in jail for stealing eight bottles of body wash from the MarketPlace on Church Street, Hamilton, when he appeared in Magistrates' Court.

Lamel MacDonald Steede, 34, was spotted by a store employee around 3 p.m. on February 29, pocketing various types of body wash.

Before the Pembroke man could leave the store, a Police officer stopped him and found the eight bottles of body wash on him, valued at $46.60.

Steede was taken to the Hamilton Police Station where he was searched, but nothing else was found. He was charged and released to appear in court.

Yesterday in Magistrates' Court, Steede discovered he was still on probation for stealing from the MarketPlace in 2005 and being in possession of drugs.

He had also been out on a conditional discharge for attempting to steal whisky in December last year.

Steede pleaded with Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he didn't realise he had been on probation, but Mr. Warner sent him to jail for nine months.
