An off-duty Police officer detained a man attempting to steal from his car, until Police arrived.

On Sunday evening the officer noticed a man trying to break into his car, which was parked on Barrack's Hill in St. George's.

He detained the man and called Police. When they arrived they arrested the man and took him to Southside Police station.

In other weekend activity, on Saturday evening a woman's handbag and key were stolen out of her car.

She told Police that she parked her car at the entrance of Cedar Park and when she returned the items were missing.

The Bermuda Police Service has noted a substantial rise in the thefts from vehicles over the last few weeks.

Police are advising the motoring public to lock vehicles at all times and not to leave anything of value in them.

Breaking into vehicles is a crime of opportunity, take away the opportunity and eliminate the chances of becoming a victim of opportunistic crimes, Police said.

Over the weekend there were also two breaking and entering reports, eight non-injury collisions and five collisions that resulted in injuries.

There were also four stolen vehicles of which two were recovered and five disturbances.
