Restaurant worker rode bike impaired and without helmet

A Sri Lankan restaurant worker has been banned from driving after riding his auxiliary cycle while impaired by drink.

Shanka Wellalage, 29, of Moongate Lane, Paget, pleaded guilty to the offence at Magistrates' Court.

Senior Crown Counsel Carrington Mahoney told the court Wellalage was spotted by the Police riding without a helmet near the Paget traffic lights at 10.45 p.m on Monday.

Noticing that his riding appeared to be unsteady, they stopped him and asked him about his lack of headgear.

At this point, said Mr. Mahoney, they noted that the defendant's breath smelled of alcohol, his speech was incoherent and he was unsteady on his feet.

Mr. Mahoney explained that the defendant works at the Cafe Lido restaurant at Elbow Beach Hotel.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined him $800, banned him from driving for 12 months and handed him ten demerit points.
