Rhiana Moore: Timeline of a tragedy

5.30 a.m. December 25 1993: Rhiana Moore is born in Bermuda on Christmas Day. She's the first child for bank worker Juliann Moore and her Police officer fiancé Rohan Moore.

May 1999: Ze Selassie, aged 23, drugs and rapes a woman in her own home. He's already got previous convictions for prowling and trespassing in the homes of females.

The year 2000: Rhiana's parents divorce, and her father moves to Barbados. Selassie is sentenced to six years in jail for the previous year's attack.

May 2002: Selassie is released from prison on parole.

January / February 2007: Rhiana's cousin sets up a profile for her on the hi5 Internet chat site soon after her 13th birthday. He later notices she's been interacting on it with a person named Ze.

June 2007 onwards: Over the course of the year from June 2007 to her death, Rhiana and Ze Selassie speak to each other via cell phone on a huge number of occasions. Rhiana called or texted him more than 11,000 times, while he called or texted her more than 5,000 times in the space of just four months from June to October 2007. It appears they may have met through a friend of Rhiana's, whose older sister was Selassie's girlfriend.

November / December 2007: Rhiana and Selassie are by now involved in a sexual relationship, and she becomes pregnant by him. She's just 13 years old, while Selassie is 31. From this month until the date of her death, Rhiana is also in contact via phone and text messages with another male who was not named during the trial on more than 8,500 occasions.

December 2007: Rhiana goes on a family cruise. According to one of her cousins, she was her usual self during the vacation but became quiet and distant after they returned home, preferring to be alone in her room.

March — May 2008: Rhiana and Selassie become aware that she is pregnant with his child. They discuss ways of getting rid of it, with Selassie fearing he may go to jail when it becomes clear he's had sex with the under-age Rhiana.

May 28 and May 29 2008: Rhiana sends numerous messages to the other male she has been in frequent contact with. She repeatedly urges him to come and visit her at home.

Rhiana and Selassie are also in phone contact during these days, planning to meet on Friday May 30 after her church youth night. Selassie writes to her on May 29: "Are you set for tomorrow?" and signs off "love you Pumpkin." She tells him she loves him too.

Friday May 30 2008: Rhiana goes to school at CedarBridge Academy as usual, where she was on the honour roll. She returns home and plays on the computer with a friend. She is in contact by text message with Selassie all day, arranging to meet him that night.

8 p.m.: Rhiana's mother arrives home from her bank job with Kentucky Fried Chicken takeout for the family. Rhiana, her mother, 10-year-old sister Khara, aunt and cousins sit down for the family meal at their home in Prospect, Devonshire.

8.40 p.m.: Mrs. Moore drives Rhiana to the Radnor Road Christian Fellowship in Hamilton Parish for a youth meeting, and bids her goodbye.

9.19 p.m.: Rhiana texts Selassie to tell him she's on her way outside to meet him. He's waiting nearby. She's told youth leader Jenna Bean she does not need her usual ride home because her aunt is picking her up.

10 p.m. — 10.30 p.m.: Mason Davis spots his friend Ze Selassie speeding in his car out of Ferry Reach in St. George's, with the passenger seat down.

Between around 10.15-10.20 p.m. and 10.40-45 p.m.: Boat owner Shawn Bremar overhears Selassie involved in a lengthy argument with Rhiana in his car while it's parked at a boatyard in St. David's. Referring to her by her family nickname, he's heard to say: "What are you doing to me Rhi?" while banging his fists on the car in anger.

11.30 p.m.: Mrs. Moore worries that her daughter has not returned home and starts calling Rhiana's friends, including Mrs. Bean, who explains what happened. Mrs. Moore's friend Euleen Furbert arrives to offer support, and the pair sit outside in Mrs. Furbert's car for a while to watch for whoever brings Rhiana home. She never comes.

They later head into town to check the likely places a teenage girl might be hanging out in. Mrs. Moore asks Rhiana's cousin Mackai Wainwright and youth leader Mrs. Bean to text Rhiana throughout the night, urging her to come home. Some replies come back, saying she's on her way. Prosecutors believe Selassie sent them, having taken the young girl's cell phone.

Saturday May 31 2008, around 5.30 a.m: Selassie's neighbour Jerome Pitcher notices that his car has returned to his Battery Road, St. David's home around dawn, having been gone all night.

7 a.m. — 7.30 a.m.: Rhiana's mother calls Hamilton Police Station to report her missing. Around the same time, Selassie arrives at the City Hall car park in Hamilton to get his car washed. It's covered in mud, and he's observed by a carwasher to look tired and depressed, "like he'd been out all night".

8.38 a.m.: Selassie arrives at Tyne's Bay waste depot in Devonshire and dumps a trash bag there. Prosecutors say it contained Rhiana's shoes, jacket and cell phone.

9.30 a.m.: Selassie contacts the Police, saying he wants to give his side of the story of Rhiana's disappearance. He's told someone will call him back.

During the course of the morning, Rhiana's mother and her friend Mrs. Furbert again head to town to look for Rhiana. Mrs. Moore goes to Digicel to find out who Rhiana called between 8.40 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. the night before. The last dialled number is that of Ze Selassie. Rhiana's cousin Mickai Wainwright, now 23, logs onto an Internet social site that Rhiana used, and finds a picture of Selassie. Her family call him, to ask if he knows where Rhiana is. Selassie lies, saying he's not heard from her in a week.

11.15 a.m.: Selassie sends a text message to Rhiana's cell phone saying: "Call your mother. I always told you that you're a queen. It's time to act like one and go home." Prosecutors believe she'd already been dead for hours.

11.38 a.m.: Rhiana's semi-clothed body is found by passers-by in a mangrove swamp at Blue Hole Hill Park in Hamilton Parish. A forensic pathologist later tells the trial it had been in the water for some time, probably around two hours.

12 noon: The victim's godfather Ralph Furbert, who is a Policeman, pulls the body from the water and identifies Rhiana. Convicted rapist Selassie is identified by the Police as the prime and only suspect, and he's arrested within hours at his home.

June 6 2008: Selassie is charged with the premeditated murder of Rhiana, and remanded into custody.

Tuesday August 3 2009: Selassie goes on trial at the Supreme Court. The jury hears from some 30 prosecution witnesses and Selassie takes the stand in his own defence. He admits to the relationship with the under-age girl, but denies killing her.

Thursday August 20: Selassie is convicted of premeditated murder by the unanimous verdict of a jury, and jailed for life.
