Solo sailor picked up by cruise ship

Early yesterday morning a 42-foot sailboat was abandoned to the north of Bermuda after damaging it's mainsail and losing control of it's engine.

The Gringo, nine days into a trip from Miami to the Azores, ran into problems in the high winds Tuesday, according to Harbour Radio, and requested a tow to shore.

Unfortunately to the one man aboard the boat, the vessel was still too far away for a tow service to meet him, and after several hours the ship was unable to reach a meeting point.

Sometime between 3.30 and 4 a.m., the sailor abandoned his vessel and was picked up by the Norwegian Dawn, which brought him to King's Wharf.
