Teenager scolded for laughing in court after admitting theft

A teenager who admitted stealing thousands of dollars worth of goods from a cycle shop was sent to jail on Friday.

Lavonte Williams, 16, of Curving Avenue, Pembroke admitted stealing $8,500 worth of goods from Added Speed & Accessories sometime between August 24 and 25.

Two auxiliary cycles, an outer cable, a muffler and DVD games were among the items stolen.

Magistrates' Court heard how the owner of the cycle shop, located on Bakery Lane in Pembroke, left the office around 6.30 p.m. on Monday, August 24. He received a call at 8 a.m. the next morning telling him the store had been broken into.

Police seized a chrome muffler and some DVD games from Williams' home on September 3.

He was taken to Hamilton Police Station and the items were positively identified by the store owner.

At the station, Williams admitted going to the store with the intent to steal but told Police he changed his mind after scouting the premises.

On Friday, however, he pleaded guilty to the offence and apologised for his actions.

"Sorry for breaking into it but I didn't actually take any of the stuff. I took some of the games and I took the bikes out, but they weren't starting so I left them down the road a little bit."

The teen was seen laughing in court and was scolded by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner who said: "Sir, is this funny? Do you think this is a game?"

Mr. Warner ordered a Social Inquiry Report for Williams. He was remanded into custody at the Co-Ed Facility until his October 30 sentencing.
