Thunder, high winds expected

Salt spray: Waves crash over a boiler reef on South Shore as winds picked up during the late afternoon on Thursday

Cold temperatures, thunderstorms and high winds are expected to last throughout today although residents can expect a brief respite tomorrow from stormy conditions.

According to meteorologist Nicole Hannon, a cold front hanging over the Island is the cause of the turbulent weather. Calmer weather is predicted for Saturday with sunny periods, moderate, northwesterly winds, and a temperature of 63 degrees Fahrenheit.

Showers, thunder and high winds are expected to return Sunday, however it is anticipated they will taper off on Monday. "Winds will increase slightly, ahead of the front with higher gusts", before high pressure returns Saturday, she stated.
