Anti-abuse seminar for women

The Women’s Resource Centre is hosting a two-hour seminar to give non-Bermudian women resources to protect themselves from abuse. The event entitled ‘Immigration Matters for Non-Bermudian Women’ will take place on Monday from 6pm to 8pm, at Charities House, on Point Finger Road, in Paget. An immigration specialist will be on hand to discuss issues including what laws are in place to protect you, what are your travel rights and what are your child bearing rights. In addition women can get detailed information on domestic violence and tips on what they can do with their spare time.Executive Director Elaine Williams said: “We are having this seminar because the WRC is taking a proactive approach to issues concerning women in Bermuda.“We have a measurable population of non-Bermudian women and we have seen an increase in women coming into the WRC in need of assistance. We just want to take a proactive approach by providing that resource to them.”She said the workshop was largely for individuals, but also encouraged employers to allow foreign employees to get well versed in immigration laws on the Island. The seminar costs $25 and people can register by calling 295-3882 or sending an e-mail to souterbridge[AT]wrcbermuda.com.Interested applicants can also fax a request for an application form to 295-9833.It is part of a series of seminars to empower women; others include information on budgeting for women, personal safety and self defence.
