While they were fewer in number than in previous years, the 100 or so students involved in the 2001 Summer Employment Programme have been praised for their work ethic, pride and integrity by Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Kim Wilson.

Addressing the students, she said: “We are living in a time when many Bermudians enter the workforce with a sense of entitlement, and this can negatively impact their work ethic.

“These current economic times have resulted in a shrinking work force and people who you know, and people who I know, are struggling to find jobs.

“Our elders and those who came before us were committed to excellence. Yet, despite this legacy of commitment and despite the current climate, work ethic continues to challenge us.

“It is important that you understand that the maintenance of good order, discipline, efficiency and proper conduct is essential to the reputation of any business or organisation.”

The 12-week Government programme, which concluded this week, gave the enrolled students on-the-job experience in fields including architecture, health, project management and computer technology, along with a series of workshops focusing on building soft skills and career planning.

Senator Wilson called on the students to continue to do their part, being responsible, innovative, respectful and hard working members of the workforce.

She said: “The one thing I hope they leave this programme with is something I feel is one of the most important qualities they can obtain a solid work ethic which reflects pride and integrity in who they are and how they conduct themselves.

“You are Bermuda’s future, and we will continue to help in any way we can in equipping you to successfully meet the needs of both the local and global market place.”
