Eighth Fabian Memorial ride tomorrow

Motorcyclists will tomorrow remember the lives lost in Hurricane Fabian during the eighth annual Fabian Memorial ride.

The ride comes just a day before the anniversary of the deadly storm, which killed four people including three police officers.

Pc Stephen Symons, Pc Nicole O’Connor, civilian station duty officer Gladys Saunders and Manuel Pacheco, a civilian, died September 5, 2003, after their vehicles stalled on the Causeway and they were washed overboard. Only PC Symons’ body was recovered.

The Bermuda Police Service, along with the Bermuda Long Riders Club and the Vintage Cycles Club have held a commemorative ride every year since.

Its aim is to raise funds for the September 5th Foundation, a registered charity that operates as a scholarship fund for children of the victims of Hurricane Fabian.

Riders will depart from City Hall car park around 2pm for a commemorative bench on the Causeway, where they will hold a brief remembrance ceremony.

They will then travel around St George’s before heading to Prospect Police Club.

Pins in honour of the charity are available prior to the start of the ride, for $10.
