Miss World hopeful Jana Outerbridge last night set off for her competition in London, carrying her Miss Bermuda crown, six suitcases of clothes and a custom-made runway version of the Bermuda gombey costume.Ms Outerbridge vowed to do Bermuda proud in her bid for the global crown, on November 6.“I'll be flying by myself, but the support of the whole community is going with me,” she said. “I can't say how much it means to me. I feel that gratitude from the bottom of my heart.”She said the excitement of seeing London for the first time, and meeting the other 121 contestants from around the world, hadn't made her nervous just yet. That's partially because, thanks to her Bermuda supporters, she now has the full required wardrobe to take on Miss World.Necessities range from cocktail dresses and gowns, to a swimsuit and a sarong. The total cost was reckoned to be around $7,000.Her national costume, finished just yesterday by gombey seamstress Kelzine Thompson, was presented to her at LF Wade International Airport.Ms Thompson, whose sons belong to the H and H gombey troupe, said she had been honoured to put together a model-worthy interpretation of the traditional outfit, featuring Bermuda's national seal and a moongate.“These costumes normally take me about six to eight months,” she said. “I made this in three weeks. I have to say, it came out nice.”She will be able to see it on the stage, when the pageant finals in Earls Court get televised around the world. For Miss Bermuda, the next 18 days will be a hectic schedule of rehearsals, a charity auction and other special events. She'll get a detailed itinerary of events on arrival.“Having the whole community behind me has made it more of a reality to me, that I'm representing Bermuda over there,” she said.Another reminder of home will be parents Gregory and Glenda in the audience.Last night, her proud father admitted being grateful for a break after the long journey to Miss World.“It's been hectic, exciting, all sorts,” he said. “My emotions are all bound up and everything. It will be good to have my living room back. The room has been full of dresses. We'll get back to some sort of normality.”They fly to London in two weeks.“We're going to get a Bermuda banner made up, go with a few folks from our church, and make some noise,” Mr Outerbridge said. “Jana told me I'll need to wear a suit and tie at the pageant, and I know England is kind of conservative, but they will know we are there.”As her daughter prepared to set off, Mrs Outerbridge said: “It feels exciting and nerve-racking, but I'm just thrilled for her to have this experience. All my feelings are wound up in one big ball. Right now it's time to breathe a sigh of relief.”For her part, Ms Outerbridge was philosophical on her own prospects as the latest Miss Bermuda.“If I am successful, I will reign for this year,” she said. “If I'm not, my plan is to return to the Island and pursue my goal to be a psychologist.”She thanked donors AS Coopers, CedarBridge Academy, Talent Explosion Bermuda and the Progressive Labour Party.“There were a lot of anonymous donors as well,” she said. “It all means a lot.”Useful website: www.missworld.com.
