Con man admits ripping off guest houses

Convicted con man Dana Edward Martin this morning admitted ripping off two local guest houses, leaving them with more than $9,000 in unpaid bills.Martin, 53, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to two counts of fraud. The court heard that between August 14 and October 7, Martin stayed at the Little Pomander Guest House, racking up a bill of $6,300, which he never paid. From October 15 to November 8, he stayed at the Blue Horizons Guest House under the false name of “Kevin Masters”, racking up a bill of $2,875.In both cases, Martin gave numerous excuses as to why payment had to be delayed, even faking phone conversations to continue the ruse.Martin has several previous convictions for fraud, and is currently awaiting trial for other fraud charges.Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney told the court that Martin is unemployed.Martin, however, claimed that he is scheduled to start work with Lopes Construction next week and hopes to reimburse the guest houses.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said that while in his view the offence merits at least a year in prison, the affected businesses would be left shortchanged if Martin is imprisoned, and the public would be left paying the tab for his incarceration.Mr Warner remanded Martin in custody until his sentencing tomorrow so that he might have the opportunity to satisfy the court that he is actually employed.
