BHB releases patient satisfaction survey

The majority of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital patients were satisfied with the facility and their treatment there last year, according to a Bermuda Hospitals Board survey.

The satisfaction survey found 84.5 percent of patients were pleased with their emergency service; 84.9 percent were happy with their in-patient experience; 94.5 percent gave high marks to outpatient service received; 94 percent were satisfied with surgical outpatient service.

Data recorded in 2009 found 66.4 percent of patients pleased with their overall emergency service; 71.2 percent happy with their in-patient experience; 89.8 gave high marks to outpatient service; 95 percent were satisfied with surgical outpatient service.

BHB has conducted the monthly survey for the past three years the most recent results are the first to be released to the public.

The survey is conducted by an independent company on behalf of BHB. According to a spokeswoman, it canvasses more than 300 patients who have used hospital outpatient services or been discharged from an inpatient unit within the last 30 days.

Said BHB chairman Wendell Brown: “We are proud to share the patient satisfaction results with Bermuda to highlight that, while there are still improvements to be made, we are on the right track. The monthly survey helps us direct precious financial resources where they are most effective, and then measure results. I am very pleased to see the results trending in the right direction and the board’s commitment to Bermuda is that we continue reporting our results each year. This should be seen as going hand in hand with our commitment to clinical quality improvement, which is measured regularly by Accreditation Canada, the 2011 review having awarded us a top level result, something only achieved by the top 20 percent of Canadian hospitals.”
