Winners of 2012 Bermuda’s Youths Got Talent to be announced Monday

The overall winners of the Bermuda Youth’s Got Talent Show sponsored by the Coalition for the Protection of Children will be announced on Monday. The top 20 finalists were announced on television during a two-hour presentation featuring young competitors who are all vying to the grand prize of $5,000.Coalition Director Sheelagh Cooper said: “We wanted to organise an event that would celebrate our young people and give them a chance to shine in the limelight and show us what they can do. And show us they did!”More than 160 young people signed up for the show, which Ms Cooper described as “an amazing response”.And plans are underway for the Coalition to host the event again next year, to make it an annual event.“Now’s the time for young people to start thinking about what they might want to showcase next year,” she added.Meanwhile, Kelly Hunt who produced the show said: “Over 2,000 votes were cast via texting. The winners will be announced at a press conference on Monday at 4.30pm at the Coalition.”Viewers were asked to vote for their favourite acts during and after the show which aired last Monday on ZBM TV.The filmed auditions were highlighted on television over a period of eight weeks. One of the show’s main objectives was to promote motivation and excitement among Bermuda’s students while raising awareness and financial support for programs run by the Coalition.Ms Cooper said: “As people realise as we provide breakfast every morning now in six schools and have a food storehouse at our Mount Hill location. Our costs for these two programmes alone are enormous and growing.“Every penny we raise will go straight to the clients we serve, and we have had so much fun with this event,” she said.“As a fundraiser it’s a bit early to say how much we were able to earn, but judging from the hundreds and hundreds of votes registered either through e-mail, texting or by telephone we think we have probably done very well indeed,” she added. The grand prize winner will receive $5,000 donated by Capital G, with two iPads up for grabs donated by iClick for winners in other categories.Ms Hunt said: “Not only is it refreshing to hear good news surrounding our youth but we feel it is important to support the arts and any other extra programmes that engage our young people in positive and healthy ways.“And it was wonderful to see the community stand behind and encourage our youth through this event.“We couldn’t be happier about the awareness, financial support and overall significance that has resulted from this fundraiser for the Coalition.”
