Vets offer pet microchipping discounts

Veterinary offices are offering special discounts for microchipping pets in honour of National Microchipping Month.Endsmeet and Ettrick Animal Hospitals are lowering microchipping fees to $30 during June. The procedure usually costs $55 or $60 and sees pets injected with a chip under the skin. The chip can be scanned so SPCA officials or veterinarians can identify and contact a lost pet’s owners.Although microchipping is only required by law for dogs, it is recommended for all pets. Unmicrochipped cats who are found often go unclaimed. One lost cat, dubbed Achilles, arrived at the SPCA injured and had to have his leg amputated. Without a microchip, the SPCA was unable to contact the owners and the cat has since been adopted by a new family. The veterinarians are offering this special on their own, and it is not subsidised by the SPCA.
