Eight teams donned aprons and showed their skills on the grill this weekend, as part of the third annual BBQ Throwdown. When the hickory-scented smoke cleared, it was Roadkill Grill standing victorious, taking home the $250 grand prize and the award for best picnic plate.Kurt Ming, who led the team with his brother Kent, said the competition was simply a chance to show off.“This is not about the money,” he said. “We’ve already spent more than the top prize. It’s about showboating.”The Mings secret weapons? Homemade cooking equipment and an entire pig.Meanwhile Team Up In Smoke was able to take home second place and $150; husband and wife duo Michael and Nicole Pantry won third place and $100 under the banner of Char Baby BBQ.Mrs Pantry had earlier been optimistic the team would retain the title of People’s Choice, which they won last year.“My husband loves cooking,” she said. “I have been taste-testing, and I say we are definitely going to win.”The pair won the award for best hamburger.Prior to the competition, The Brethrens’ Mac McGuinty was uncertain how his team would place. He took home the top prize last in last year’s competition but his cooking partner was unable to attend this year.“I really like cooking for people. It’s my favourite thing to do,” he said. “I work down at National Sports Centre and I BBQ for the crew down there regularly. I just like to do it.”The team was able to take home the title of Best Ribs.Event organiser Selena Minors said the event was a roaring success.“I think it went really well,” she said of Sunday’s competition. “Everyone seemed to have a cool, relaxed atmosphere and everyone bonded.“I think that a lot of people just needed a day off, and they came together as part of the community.”
