Investments in Bermuda demonstrate confidence that Bermuda is on the rebound, according to Premier Paula Cox.Last week, LinkBermuda announced plans to invest tens of millions of dollars on the creation of an island-wide fibre-optic network which could provide residents with improved internet access. And the Green family announced plans to purchase the Fairmont Hamilton Princess and invest $50 million in refurbishments.Responding to the news, the Premier said: “Make no mistake, these are tough times for the global economy, but these investments show confidence in the future of our Island.”The Premier also noted that the announcements came after it was revealed that retail sales in July surged by 6.2 percent, and that both of the announced projects will create new jobs for Bermudians. She also cited the recent announcement by captive reinsurer Equator Reinsurance Limited’s plans to increase it’s local presence and new retail businesses as signs of confidence that the economy is improving.“It’s heartening when you hear that a major reinsurer is closing their Dublin offices and opening a new office in Bermuda, which will employ Bermudians,” she said. “It’s heartening when you hear about a new 8,000 sq ft furnishings store opening shop.“It’s exciting to hear about four new businesses opening shop in St George’s, and it’s encouraging when we hear that investors are confident about the future of our economy.“There are some in the opposition who would like to talk our economy down, however this Government will continue to work for the people of this country by attracting new investment to our shores that will bring new jobs and opportunities for Bermudians.”
