Driver hit with stiff fines in Magistrates court

A 26-year-old man was fined $900 and banned from driving on the roads when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.Prosecutor Susan Mulligan told the court that on October 9, Calvin Bean, of Palm Valley, Southampton, was riding west along Crow Lane, where he approached the roundabout.Police officers saw Bean swerving and riding in an erratic manner at the roundabout and also as he rode up Trimingham Hill. The officers stopped Bean, who appeared incoherent with bloodshot eyes. When asked to take a breath analysis test, Bean refused. He was later charged with impaired driving. In court, Bean produced a letter from his employer referencing his good character. However, despite the letter and the fact that Bean had no similar previous convictions, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $800 and banned him from driving all vehicles for 12 months.Bean also pleaded guilty to another traffic offence, admitting to riding without any driver’s license in the vicinity of Kindley Field on March 3.Mr Warner fined Bean an additional $100 for the offence.
