Island marks World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day was observed on the steps of City Hall over lunch Friday with a speech by Health Minister Zane DeSilva and presentations by St Davids Primary and TN Tatum Middle School.

Health Minister Zane DeSilva yesterday challenged Bermuda to produce an ‘HIV-free’ generation as part of events honouring World AIDS Day.The number of affected persons has declined in recent years, he said at a ceremony at City Hall.“For the first time in 30 years it is realistic to talk about achieving an HIV-free generation,” he said.“In order to meet the challenge of getting to zero, we must work together to achieve universal access to HIV prevention, treatment and care.”AIDS was first seen in Bermuda in 1982. More than 700 residents have been diagnosed with HIV in the 30 years since. It is estimated that there are over 300 persons living with HIV/AIDS on the Island today.HIV tests are offered at the Victoria Street Clinic from Monday to Thursday from 8.30am to 11.30am and also from 1.45pm to 3.30pm on a drop-in basis.Testing is free and confidential.
