Wells' Cup tribute to dead friend
Nahki Wells dedicated his opening goal in Bradford City’s Capital One Cup 3-1 win over Aston Villa last night to his late friend and former Bermuda international Tumaini Steede.Scoring after 19 minutes, the pacy striker showed a shirt under his jersey that paid a fitting tribute to Mr Steede as his side grabbed another famous win over a Premier League opponent.City beat Wigan Athletic before sending Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal out at the quarter final stage to book their place in the last four.“It was and still is a fitting tribute to someone that he held dear to his heart,” said older brother Aaron Simmons. “Many people forget those who they have grown up with and have been an influence in their lives, but Nahki said he would honour one of his best friends legacy and play for him as well as Bermuda.“He is doing the whole country proud and people that support other teams are also rooting him, which is a joy to see.”Having dedicated the 2012-13 Npower League Two season to the memory of Mr Steede, Mr Wells wears his beloved friend’s name and squad number (10) which he wore for Devonshire Cougars, on his boots.Mr Steede, who was a talented midfielder for Devonshire Cougars, succumbed to serious injuries he sustained in a bike accident last summer.The pair had played alongside each other at the national Under-15, Under -18 and Under -23 levels, with Mr Wells previously stating that all his future success would be dedicated to the promising footballer.“We both actually wear the same boots (Vapors) and I thought he would be proud watching over to see the boots I created.
