Author to sign copies of new book on Islam in Bermuda this evening

Radell Tankard will sign his new book, ‘The Development of Islam in Bermuda’, at the National Bermuda Library today.

According to a press release from Dr Tankard, who holds a doctorate in African Studies: “This publication gives an account of the untold story of Islam in Bermuda, beginning with the arrival of the Nation of Islam in the late 1950s”.

“Discussed are some of the social struggles, conditions and circumstances that helped the organisation to take root on the Island.

“Several 21st century challenges are also identified not just for the Muslim community in Bermuda, but for Bermuda as a whole, with the idea of moral leadership as a critical component in meeting these challenges.”

Dr Tankard said his book “serves not only to educate but ultimately to reduce some of the anxieties that currently exist among Bermudians and others with respect to Muslims and Islam worldwide”.

The author has written other books called ‘The Evolution of Islam in Senegambia’ and ‘Cup Match Legends and Personalities’.

He has conducted research in Africa and written on the topic of migration and economic development in Senegal, taught at Howard University and Morgan State University and presented at numerous local and overseas conferences.

Books are available for purchase directly from him by e-mailing Mrtankard@aol.com or by calling 534-8265.

Today’s book signing takes place between 5.30pm and 7pm.
